Condolence From: Bruce Blackie
Condolence: I just read of Jim's death in the Pittsburgh Seminary alumni magazine and am shocked and saddened. Jim was two years ahead of me at the Lawrenceville School, where his father was a student residence housemaster. He was two years ahead of me at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. I knew him at neither place. But we linked in Akron, Ohio, where I was pastor of the Presbyterian church he belonged to. His humor, his fun-loving nature (golf and sailing), and his directness to cut through all the you know what and tell reality as it was, he was one of a kind. He enriched my life, and I note many others in addition. We miss you, Jim. Thanks for being who you were.

Condolence: Jim was the quintessential philosopher: He embodied his philosophy, he lived it. He was generous and honesty and incredibly knowledgeable. I remember his warmth, his active mind, his robust enthusiasm, his great capacity for listening, and the stacks of books that he brought to each class - a different stack every week - to offer to us his students a window into the riches of the world of the seeker and delight. I am sorry I am not able to attend his Memorial Service at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, where he taught two courses pretty much every term, when not three. That he has asked that remembrances in his name be sent to the Southern Poverty Law Center speaks to the long reach of his life well-lived. Here's to Jim Wright! 'Til we meet again!

Condolence: We just lost a wonderful friend and colleague. Jim & I shared not just theological interests but an interest in the history of the Congregational Church in Searsport, where I was the pastor and he worked as a museum tour guide. This next summer and years will be poorer for his absence.

Condolence: Jim had many friends in the OLLI at Duke community (Osher LifeLong Learning Institute in Duke University) who remember him fondly. Jim introduced me to philosophy in his own special way, never telling us the answers but guiding us to find our own answers. He spoke often about his love of the Maine coast and the Penobscot Marine Museum. I hope to always remember Jim.

Condolence: I knew Jim through OLLI, as a member of many of the classes that he "convened"--as opposed to "taught." Jim was the greatest lover of books that I've ever known, and his enthusiasm for all things philosophical caused me to travel many roads I would have missed, were it not for his gentle (and persistent) prodding. We last met at the OLLI chorus and swing band concert and agreed that we were due to get together for lunch. I sorry that didn't come to pass. I will miss him.

Condolence: Jim was an enthusiastic member of the bass section of the Durham Community Chorale. I looked forward to hearing his voice behind me during rehearsals and performances. He'll be missed by the entire Chorale, especially his fellow basses.

Condolence: Jim was a dear friend, supporter and mentor to me. My life was enriched by him as I am sure that he enriched those of many others. I will know that I will feel his closeness in the delight of our warm summer days along the coast of Maine and perhaps hear a hint of his voice during our musical evenings.
